Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced by your body. Injectable dermal fillers are used to enhance and contour natural beauty by reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and facial folds and by creating symmetry, structure and adding volume to the face and lips. Each dermal filler is unique and selected for you based on your goals!

FAQ
How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers are made of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body, with the highest concentrations in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. As we age, the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face begins to thin. This loss of volume leads to either a sunken or sagging appearance of the face, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and thin lips. Injectable HA is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.
Is there anything I should not do after my treatment?
Dermal filler injection is a quick and safe procedure that has very little impact on usual activity on the day of injection. We recommend the following precautions to allow the dermal filler injections to settle optimally and provide the best aesthetic outcome:
- No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 4 hours after treatment, including facials.
- No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
- Keep upright for 4 hours — do not lay face down.
- Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.

Are there any possible side effects to dermal filler treatment?
Injectable fillers are generally well tolerated with little to no adverse effects. In most cases, there will be no side effects to treatment. The most common side effects include:
- swelling
- bruising
- redness
- pain at the injection site.
True allergies to injectable dermal filler are exceedingly rare and the risk of allergic reaction is low. Your injector will thoroughly discuss all risks associated with dermal fillers prior to your treatment.
How old do I have to be to receive dermal fillers at Renew Wellness and Aesthetics?
At Renew Wellness and Aesthetics, we begin treatment at age 18. No one under the age 18 will receive treatment, regardless of parental consent. There is no upper age limit to receiving treatment.
Are there any contraindications to receiving dermal fillers?
Yes. There are a few contraindications to treatment with dermal fillers.
- Active or recurrent infection near the injection site
- Autoimmune diseases
- Dental work within the past two weeks or upcoming in the two weeks following treatment
- Multiple, severe allergies including history of anaphylaxis
- History of bee or wasp sting allergy
- History of allergies to any of the contents of the selected dermal filler (ie- lidocaine, if applicable)
There are very few people with true contraindications to treatment with dermal filler. If you have concerns or questions, our trained professional aesthetics injectors will be able to assist you during your consultation and let you know if treatment with dermal filler is right for you!
Am I allowed to touch my face/lips after dermal fillers?
We recommend avoiding touching the area of injection for at least 6 hours after your treatment. After that, you may use water and a gentle cleanser on the treated area. The injection site may be a little sore or tender immediately following your treatment. Treatment will not prevent you from washing or continuing with your normal skincare regimen. However, you are advised not to apply firm pressure to the area of treatment for the first few hours after injection in order to avoid moving the filler.
Can I wear makeup after receiving dermal fillers?
Ideally, avoid applying make-up to the injected site for 24 hours in order to reduce the risk of infection. If necessary, there are brands such as oxygenetix made specifically for use after procedures that you may apply to your skin. Again, it is recommended that you do not apply too much pressure during these activities in order to ensure that the injected filler does not move.
How soon after dermal filler can I go back to normal exercise regimen?
Patients can resume normal daily activities immediately following treatment. However, in order to reduce the risk of infection and bruising, we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 48 hours following your treatment.
Can I receive treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Unfortunately there is very little research or data regarding the use of fillers in pregnant or nursing individuals. You can safely resume or initiate treatment after you have delivered your baby and/or weaned from nursing.
How soon can I drink alcohol after my treatment?
Some practitioners advise limiting alcohol in the first 24 hours and for the day prior to treatment. This is because alcohol can thin the blood much like an aspirin, and abstaining can help prevent bruising.
How long can I expect my results to last?
Each dermal filler has different characteristics and the duration of the product has many factors. Dermal filler lasts anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. The majority of fillers last around 12-16 months. Your injector will select the best dermal filler for your needs and discuss the duration of the dermal filler with you.
What happens when my dermal filler wears off?
Once the dermal filler treatment wears off, your face will appear very similar, if not exactly how it was prior to the treatment. This means that any lines or wrinkles that were smoothed with filler will reappear and any volume or contouring will go away. You will simply witness your normal facial features returning.
Are there any possible complications?
Dermal filler injections are considered quick and safe. As with any injection or procedure, there is a small risk of complications including but not limited to infection, undesired aesthetic appearance, and vascular occlusion. These complications are rare and our trained professional injectors will discuss all associated risk with you prior to the procedure.
What if my results are not what I expect?
Results from dermal filler injections can be seen immediately after the treatment. Following your treatment it is normal to see or feel some lumps, bumps, swelling, redness and bruising in the area that was treated. These will slowly improve over a few days and will continue to improve for 2-4 weeks. At this point, the majority of patients love the results of their dermal filler treatment. If necessary, we review the technical and aesthetic results of the treatment in a follow up appointment after this time and can make any necessary adjustments.

How long can I receive dermal fillers for?
Each dermal filler has a different duration. On average, dermal filler lasts around 12-16 months. The effects of dermal filler will slowly wear off over this time frame. There is no limit on how long you can continue to receive treatments. We recommend dermal filler injections be spaced at least 2 weeks apart until you are satisfied with your aesthetic appearance. From there, maintenance filler is typically injected once per year.
When should I schedule my appointment for my next injection?
We recommend spacing your treatments at least 2 weeks apart. Your injector will develop a plan for you and be able to assist you with scheduling your next appointment. We typically ask to schedule your next appointment at the time of your injection in order to secure your spot with your injector.
