How Do Neurotoxins Work?Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau are neuromodulators. Small amounts of the purified Botulinum Toxin protein are injected into the muscles, which temporarily relaxes these targeted muscles, causing fine lines and wrinkles to diminish. The effects typically last 3-4 months, sometimes longer.

FAQ
What neuotoxins do you offer?
Currently we have Botox and Jeuveau.
Is there anything I should not do after my treatment?
Neurotoxin injection is a quick and safe procedure that has very little impact on usual activity on the day of injection. We deliver tiny injections to relax the action of the muscles that create excessive movement. These movements create ‘dynamic wrinkles’ over time. We recommend the following precautions to allow the anti-wrinkle injections to work optimally in the targeted muscles:
- No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 4 hours after treatment, including facials.
- No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
- Keep upright for 4 hours — do not lay face down.
- Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.

Are there any possible side effects to my treatment?
In most cases, there will be no side effects to treatment. However, because everyone has different physiology, people can be affected in different ways. A small minority of people have reported the following side effects.
- Bruising — For the majority of patients, the area of injection will appear no different. For a small minority, some minor bruising may occur.
- Bumps — A few minutes after treatment small bumps may be visible on the skin. These will disappear very quickly.
- Headache — True neurotoxin allergies are exceedingly rare. Temporary headache is the most commonly reported symptom following anti-wrinkle injectables, though the numbers of patients who report headaches is very small compared with the number of treatments performed. Any headache can be treated with usual over the counter painkillers.
Are there any contraindications to receiving neurotoxin injections?
Yes. There are a few contraindications to receiving botulinum toxin injections.
- Keloid scarring
- Neuromuscular disorders (ie- myasthenia gravis)
- Botulinum toxin allergies
- Egg allergies
- Body dysmorphic disorder
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Amyotrophic lateralizing sclerosis myopathies.
There are very few people with true contraindications to treatment with Botulinum Toxin. If you have concerns or questions, our trained professional aesthetics injectors will be able to assist you during your consultation and let you know if treatment is right for you!
How old do you have to be to receive neurotoxin at Renew Wellness and Aesthetics?
At Renew Wellness and Aesthetics, we begin treatment at age 18. No one under the age 18 will receive treatment, regardless of parental consent. There is no upper age limit to receiving treatment. It is never too late to come in and receive a full face consultation with our trained professional aesthetic injectors!
Am I allowed to touch my face after treatment?
Yes. Your face will not feel overly sore or tender. Treatment will not prevent you from washing or continuing with your normal skincare regimen. However, you are advised to avoid rubbing or massaging your face for up to 4 hours after your treatment.
Can I wear makeup after my treatment?
Yes. Ideally, avoid make-up for 4 hours after your treatment to reduce the risk of infection. However, mineral make-up can be applied 1 hour after treatment. Again, it is recommended that you do not apply too much pressure during these activities in order to ensure that the injectable treatment does not disperse from the treated area.
How soon after neurotoxin can I go back to normal exercise regimen?
Patients can resume normal daily activities immediately following treatment. Light exercise can be performed after 4 hours but it is recommended that strenuous activities are avoided for 24 hours.
After 4 hours you may perform light exercise such as:
Walking
Jogging
Upright yoga (avoid any positions that leave you lying flat or upside down)
Gardening
It is recommended that you wait 24 hours before attempting any strenuous exercise, including:
Weight training
Cross-training
Long-distance running
HIIT
Yoga (positions where the body is inverted)

Can I receive treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Unfortunately there is very little research or data regarding the use of neurotoxins in pregnant or nursing individuals. You can safely resume or initiate treatment after you have delivered your baby and/or weaned from nursing.
How soon can I drink alcohol after my treatment?
Some practitioners advise limiting alcohol in the first 24 hours and for the day prior to treatment. This is because alcohol can thin the blood much like an aspirin, and abstaining can help prevent bruising.
How long can I expect my results to last?
Although some people experience longer-lasting results, scientific evidence shows the effect of neurotoxin injections usually lasts 12-16 weeks.
What happens when my neurotoxin wears off?
Once the treatment wears off, your muscles will function as they did before the injection. This means the wrinkles you smoothed or reduced will slowly begin to appear again. You will simply witness old wrinkles reappearing, and no new wrinkles should emerge.
Are there any possible complications?
Neurotoxin injections are considered quick and safe. As with any injection or procedure, there is a small risk of complications including but not limited to infection and undesired aesthetic appearance. These complications are rare and our trained professional injectors are familiar with these complications and how to manage them.
What if my results are not what I expect?
Neurotoxin injections usually begin to take effect 3-5 days after injection and continue to improve up to day 14. Two weeks after treatment, the injections should have reached their maximum effect. We review the technical and aesthetic results of the treatment in a follow up appointment after this time and can make any necessary dose adjustments (additional cost my apply).

How long can I receive neurotoxin injections for?
Neurotoxin injections do not ‘build up’ or accumulate in your system. There is no limit on how long you can continue to receive treatments. We recommend scheduled treatments at about 12-16 weeks. Once the effects have worn off it is safe for you to top up treatments in the same area. It is also perfectly safe to have multiple treatments in different areas at the same time.
When should I schedule my next appointment for neurotoxin injection?
We recommend spacing your treatments 12-16 weeks apart, as this is how long the neurotoxin typically lasts. We typically ask to schedule your next appointment at the time of your injection in order to secure your spot with your injector.
